Tanzania has sworn in Deogratius John Ndejembi as the country’s new Vice President, completing a rapid transition following the departure of Emmanuel Nchimbi.

Ndejembi took the oath of office on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during a ceremony held at Chamwino State House in Dodoma.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan congratulated Ndejembi on his appointment and reminded him that the Vice President’s office is a public trust that comes with major responsibilities.

Samia said Ndejembi’s appointment reflected confidence in his leadership abilities, experience and potential to serve the country.

She urged the new Vice President to carry out his duties with humility, integrity and patriotism while putting the interests of Tanzanians first.

Ndejembi previously served as Energy Minister and is also a Member of Parliament representing Chamwino constituency.

His appointment followed the resignation of Emmanuel Nchimbi, who stepped down from the Vice Presidency earlier this week. Ndejembi was subsequently endorsed by the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and approved by Parliament before taking the oath of office.

The new Vice President now begins his tenure alongside President Samia as the government navigates a significant leadership change at the top of Tanzania’s administration.

The transition has attracted attention because Nchimbi’s resignation came less than a year after he assumed office, followed by his removal from the ruling CCM party.

Ndejembi’s swearing-in marks the final stage of the constitutional process that began with his nomination and parliamentary approval.
