A shocking incident has reportedly unfolded in Embu County after Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was allegedly forced to leave a rally following an attack by a group of goons.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show chaotic scenes at the rally, with some individuals allegedly attacking people and torching vehicles as security officers moved in to contain the situation.
According to the reports accompanying the videos, the Deputy President’s security team intervened and quickly evacuated him from the scene as the situation reportedly became tense.
The incident has since sparked fresh concerns over security in the country, with questions being raised about the ability of security agencies to protect leaders and members of the public during political gatherings.
Reports further indicate that some activists have now issued a strong message to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, allegedly giving him until Monday to resign over what they claim is his failure to adequately address the worsening security situation.
The reported demand comes amid growing public concern over violent disruptions at political and public gatherings in different parts of the country.
Human Rights Watch recently raised concerns over a series of violent attacks targeting civil society and opposition gatherings in Kenya, saying authorities should ensure prompt and transparent investigations and protect people’s right to participate in political activities safely.
Murkomen has previously maintained that the government would take action against individuals involved in violence and the use of crude weapons during public gatherings.
