Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has ruled out joining former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), saying she has no plans to move to the party.
Waiguru’s position comes as political leaders in Kirinyaga continue to take different sides ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The governor cited the experience of former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Wangui Ngirici, who recently left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined Gachagua’s DCP.
Ngirici has previously spoken about her political fallout with Waiguru and claimed that she was sidelined after Waiguru entered the race for the Kirinyaga governorship.
Waiguru has now made it clear that she does not intend to follow the same political path by joining Gachagua’s party.
The governor and Gachagua have had different political positions since their time in the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Gachagua served as Deputy President from 2022 until his impeachment in 2024, while Waiguru has remained the Governor of Kirinyaga.
The latest development comes as political activity increases across the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua has been working to strengthen the DCP and attract leaders from different parts of the country.
Ngirici is among the politicians who have joined his political camp and is expected to compete for the Kirinyaga governor’s seat under the DCP.
Waiguru, however, appears determined to maintain her own political position rather than join Gachagua’s party.
Her decision could shape the political contest in Kirinyaga, where several leaders are already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
