Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has urged residents to prepare early for the expected October El Niño rains as the county intensifies measures to reduce flooding across the capital.

Sakaja said Nairobi has deployed multi-agency teams to clean, widen and deepen drainage systems, waterways and other areas that could contribute to flooding.

The teams are also removing silt, garbage and other materials blocking drainage channels and culverts in different parts of the city.

The county has mapped flood-prone areas across all 17 sub-counties to help identify locations requiring urgent intervention.

Sakaja urged residents to cooperate with authorities, participate in clean-up activities and pay attention to official weather and emergency alerts.

He particularly warned people living in vulnerable areas to be ready to move to safer locations if authorities issue evacuation advisories.

The governor said the county’s approach is focused on prevention and early action rather than waiting for flooding to occur before responding.

Nairobi has experienced serious flooding in the past, making preparations important as the October-December rainfall season approaches.

County teams are expected to continue clearing drainage systems and waterways in the coming weeks to improve the city’s ability to handle heavy rainfall.

Sakaja urged residents to remain alert and avoid actions such as dumping waste in drainage channels, which can worsen flooding.

The county government is also strengthening emergency response and disaster-management measures to ensure it can respond quickly if heavy rains cause flooding.

The governor’s warning comes as Nairobi prepares for the expected rains, with residents being encouraged to take precautions early and follow instructions from authorities.
