Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has suggested that a coalition arrangement could help resolve differences emerging within the Linda Mwananchi movement over the political party to use in the 2027 General Election.

The comments come after a disagreement emerged between Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over the movement’s preferred political vehicle.

Babu has backed the Mwananchi Party, while Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has supported the Ukombozi People’s Party as the vehicle for Sifuna’s presidential bid.

Babu has proposed that different parties should retain their identities while working together under a coalition. He has also continued to publicly support Sifuna’s presidential ambitions despite the disagreement over the political vehicle.

Onyonka’s proposal comes as leaders within Linda Mwananchi seek to maintain unity while preparing for the 2027 elections.

The disagreement has raised questions about whether the movement will eventually settle on one political party or operate through a coalition involving several parties.

The issue has also drawn attention because Sifuna is at the centre of the movement’s presidential plans, while Babu is also building his political base in Nairobi ahead of the next election.

However, Babu has rejected suggestions that his differences with Sifuna amount to a political fallout. He has maintained that he supports Sifuna’s presidential bid and that the disagreement is mainly about how the movement should organise itself for the election.

Onyonka’s comments therefore point to a possible middle ground, where leaders could maintain their individual political parties while cooperating under a wider coalition.

The debate is expected to continue as Linda Mwananchi works to establish its structure and electoral strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
