Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the country’s First Gentleman.

Hafidh died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at around 8:00 am while receiving treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.

The announcement was made by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who confirmed that Hafidh had been receiving treatment for a heart-related condition.

The Vice President extended his condolences to President Samia, the family, relatives, friends and the people of Tanzania following the death.

Funeral arrangements are already underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, as the country prepares to mourn the First Gentleman.

Hafidh had largely maintained a low public profile while serving as Tanzania’s First Gentleman. He was married to President Samia, and the couple had four children.

His death is a major loss to President Samia and her family, with more details about the funeral arrangements expected to be announced.
