Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has welcomed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other leaders ahead of the Linda Mwananchi movement’s much-anticipated rally in Meru on Sunday, August 30.
Sifuna is leading the movement’s latest grassroots mobilisation drive as it seeks to expand its support base beyond areas traditionally associated with the opposition. Meru is considered an important political battleground ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Mwangaza, who recently joined the Linda Mwananchi team, has taken a leading role in mobilising residents ahead of the movement’s arrival in her political backyard.
She was also seen alongside Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Bumula MP Jack Wamboka as preparations for the rally gathered pace.
The Meru visit will be the movement’s third major engagement in the wider Mount Kenya region after previous activities in Thika and Nyandarua.
Sifuna has urged Meru residents to turn up for the rally, although he has clarified that the team will not be able to tour every part of the vast county during the one-day visit. He said further grassroots engagements would be organised in other parts of Meru at a later date.
The planned rally has also attracted controversy, with Mwangaza raising concerns over alleged attempts to disrupt the movement’s activities in parts of Meru.
She has called on security agencies to ensure the safety of leaders and supporters attending the political gatherings.
Despite the concerns, Mwangaza has maintained that she will accompany Sifuna during the Meru tour and urged residents to allow political activities to take place peacefully.
The rally comes as Linda Mwananchi continues its nationwide mobilisation campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.
For Mwangaza, the event also provides an opportunity to demonstrate her political influence in Meru after leaving the county government and joining the opposition-leaning movement.
Sifuna’s reception in Meru will equally offer an important test of Linda Mwananchi’s ability to attract support in the Mount Kenya East region as the movement seeks to establish a wider national presence.
