The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has demanded urgent answers from police over the reported disappearance of a clinical officer employed by the Kajiado County Government.
KUCO said Christin Wanjiru was reportedly arrested and taken to Kitengela Police Station, where she was allegedly held without being promptly informed of the reason for her arrest.
The union said it later received information that Wanjiru had been removed from the police station and placed in an unofficial Subaru vehicle. Her destination and whereabouts were reportedly unknown when KUCO issued its statement on Thursday, August 27.
KUCO Secretary-General and CEO George Gibore called for a full account of what happened, including whether Wanjiru’s detention was officially recorded, who arrested her and who authorised her removal from the station.
The union also wants authorities to establish whether she was released or transferred, who received her and where she was taken.
KUCO has called on the National Police Service, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Internal Affairs Unit and other relevant state and human-rights institutions to urgently establish Wanjiru’s whereabouts and ensure her safety.
The union’s concerns come amid increased public scrutiny over the treatment of people taken into police custody and calls for greater accountability within the security agencies.
KUCO said the circumstances surrounding Wanjiru’s reported disappearance require urgent clarification and called on authorities to provide answers to her family, colleagues and the public.
