South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has temporarily stepped away from public engagements after falling ill.

The South African Presidency announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, that Ramaphosa had been advised by his medical team to rest and recover. No details about the nature or severity of his illness were disclosed.

Ramaphosa recently returned to South Africa after attending the BRICS Summit in India. He arrived back in the country on Monday before receiving advice from his doctors to take time off from his public schedule.

During his absence, Cabinet ministers will represent the President at scheduled public engagements where possible, according to the Presidency.

The announcement comes as Ramaphosa’s administration continues with its official programme both within South Africa and internationally.

The Presidency did not give a specific date for when Ramaphosa is expected to resume his full schedule. His return to public duties will depend on advice from his medical team.

The President’s office has also asked the public and media to rely on official information regarding his health rather than unverified reports.

For now, Ramaphosa is expected to focus on rest and recovery while government ministers handle engagements on his behalf.
