COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has once again stirred political debate after boldly declaring that the Luhya community will continue supporting President William Ruto beyond 2027 and all the way to 2032.
Speaking during a public function, Atwoli said, “Waluhya wananisikiliza mimi, na nimewaambia 2027 wafuate William Ruto. Sisi Waluhya tunasema tutam mpaka 2032!” — meaning “The Luhyas listen to me, and I have told them to follow William Ruto in 2027. We, the Luhyas, are saying we will support him until 2032!”
Atwoli’s remarks mark a major shift in tone from his previous stance. Before the 2022 General Election, he was one of Ruto’s fiercest critics, famously warning Kenyans against voting for him. However, following Ruto’s victory, Atwoli has publicly reconciled with the president, describing him as a capable and visionary leader.
The veteran trade unionist said his support is driven by development interests for Western Kenya. He praised the president for including several leaders from the Luhya community in key government positions and urged locals to unite behind Ruto to ensure continuity of projects started under his administration.
Atwoli’s endorsement has, however, sparked mixed reactions. Supporters within the Kenya Kwanza coalition have welcomed his stand as a sign of political maturity and unity, while critics accuse him of political opportunism, claiming his shifting allegiance is driven by self-interest rather than principle.
As 2027 draws closer, Atwoli’s influence over Western Kenya’s political direction remains significant. His strong voice and deep grassroots networks could play a key role in shaping President Ruto’s re-election prospects — especially if the Luhya vote rallies behind his call to “tutam mpaka 2032.”
