Three-year Long Wait For Justice Ends in Jubilations As Orphan Raped By Thugs Finds Reprieve, Smiles After This Man Intervened in Mombasa

Halima became a shadow of her former self after the rape. She no longer took joy in the simple
pleasures. She stopped going to school, her friends noticed her sulking mood, her trauma still
haunted her, making her shiver in the middle of the night. Her mother hasn’t had a peaceful
day since, trying everything to catch the three thugs that pounced on her innocence and took
turns raping her.
The police had gotten accustomed to Mama Halima’s visits, to ask for any progress in the
pursuit of the animals. Every week, she shows up, looking more burdened than the last. After
almost nine months, a man suspected to be part of the gang was arrested, but was released
two days later. The police told her that he had a solid alibi for the day of the incident. The case
went cold after that, as Mama Halima retreated to her home, beaten, battered and feeling
sorry for her 12-year-old daughter.
From her testimony in court, Halima had come home from school, did her homework diligently
and went about helping her mother prepare supper. She had gone to the shop to purchase
cooking oil when she was accosted by the three thugs near an incomplete building in
Mshomoroni, Kisauni Area. She stood no chance against them as they shoved a piece of
clothing in her mouth and dragged her inside a dark corner. Out of shock, she passed out and
only woke up when the shameless beings had vanished. As she narrated her ordeal, her mother
couldn’t hold back her tears.

As time went by, Mama Halima never forgot what happened, as Halima tried to grasp her new
reality. She did go back to school, with help from the local Chief but it was easy to tell that she
was a troubled child. Mama Halima never gave up, looking for ways to find peace. Her efforts
paid off when an old lady told her to call a native doctor called Dr. Mugwenu, assuring her that
he could help her nab the suspects.
She called Dr. Mugwenu around 10 am and by 12 noon, all the three culprits had surrendered
themselves to Nyali Police station, confessing about the rape incident. They were apprehended
immediately and charges labelled against them. Mama Halima thanked Dr. Mugwenu for finally
finding justice, as she knew that none of the culprits will see the light of day this century.
Halima smiled when her mother told her about the good news.
