Stolen Identity, Stolen Future: How a Stranger Took My TSC Job and KSh 1.8M

A Kenyan woman, Caroline Kairuthi Kubai, is seeking justice after her personal documents were allegedly used by another individual to unlawfully secure a teaching position with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and obtain a loan amounting to KSh 1.8 million.

Kubai claims that the suspect, identified as Carolyn Makena, reportedly used her academic certificates, national ID, TSC number, KRA PIN, and even opened bank accounts in her name. According to Kubai, these actions led to the issuance of a TSC employment letter to the impersonator and the successful application for a loan from Unison Sacco.

How It Allegedly Happened

Speaking in an emotional interview, Kubai narrated how she had attended TSC interviews in Laikipia in 2022 and was later informed she had been shortlisted. However, she was shocked to learn that another individual had already been hired under her name.

“The job offer intended for me was given to someone else. That person worked for 11 months using my identity and took a loan I never applied for. I only became aware of the issue in February this year when I discovered a loan was issued in my name,” she stated.

Following the discovery, Kubai filed a police report and notified the TSC. An internal investigation is reportedly underway, and the suspect was arrested and arraigned in court on April 21.

Employment Challenges

Kubai expressed concern that her TSC number is still listed as active in the commission’s system, making it difficult for her to secure employment both in public and private schools.

“Every time I apply for a job, the system shows that I’m already employed. Even private schools won’t consider me until this issue is resolved,” she lamented.

She further urged relevant authorities to expedite the investigation and help clear her name, emphasizing the emotional and financial toll the ordeal has taken on her.

Ongoing Investigations

The case is still under review by authorities. Kubai hopes that a thorough investigation will lead to a resolution and allow her to rebuild her teaching career.
