“Sisi Wajaluo tumekuwa yatima, hatuna uwezo wa kuweka demands, sijawahi ona yatima wakiweka demands, basi sisi tunafuata William Ruto na tutatosheka “-Jared Okello

Nyando Member of Parliament Jared Okello has stirred political debate after making a bold statement regarding the Luo community’s political position. Speaking during a public event, the legislator admitted that the Luo community has been left politically stranded and must now align itself with President William Ruto’s leadership.

In his words, Okello said, “Sisi Wajaluo tumekuwa yatima, na hatuna uwezo wa kuweka demands. Sijawahi ona yatima wakiweka demands, kwa hivyo sisi tunafuata William Ruto na tutatosheka na ile anatupea.”

The MP’s statement sparked mixed reactions, with some Kenyans applauding him for being pragmatic and willing to work with the government for the sake of development, while others accused him of betraying the long-standing political stand of the Luo community, which has traditionally supported Raila Odinga.

Supporters of Okello argue that his remarks reflect the reality that the Luo community has been sidelined from government benefits due to its persistent opposition stance. They say aligning with the current administration could open doors to development and inclusivity.

However, critics viewed his comments as a surrender of dignity and political strength. According to them, describing the Luo community as “yatima” (orphans) and pledging unconditional support to President Ruto paints a picture of political weakness and desperation.

Political analysts see Okello’s remarks as part of a growing wave of leaders from the Nyanza region who are slowly warming up to the Kenya Kwanza government. This shift comes amid efforts by President Ruto to win over regions that previously voted overwhelmingly for Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

While Okello insists his statement was driven by a desire to bring development to his people, it has reignited the debate over the Luo community’s political future and its place in national leadership.
