Several people are feared dead following a tragic accident involving a matatu at the Githurai roundabout on the morning of Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
According to eyewitnesses, the matatu was traveling from Roysambu towards Githurai 45 when it reportedly lost control after hitting a bump. The vehicle veered off the road and rammed into roadside traders.
Preliminary reports suggest that the driver may have experienced brake failure, leading to the loss of control. Other sources indicated the driver was attempting to avoid a collision between a pickup and a motorcycle before the incident occurred.
Photos and videos circulating online show a crowd gathered at the scene as police and emergency responders carried out rescue operations.
Casualty reports vary, with estimates ranging between five and nine people. Some victims were reportedly pronounced dead at the scene, while others were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
The area around the Githurai roundabout is typically a busy hub, with numerous vendors selling items such as groceries and fruits. The presence of a matatu stage also adds to the daily congestion.
Following the accident, transport and business activities were temporarily disrupted. Authorities urged motorists to avoid the underpass, citing obstruction caused by the wreckage.
The incident sparked widespread reactions online, with many Kenyans expressing their condolences. Others called on relevant agencies, including the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), to address safety concerns along major roads, especially in areas where traders operate close to the highway.
