President William Ruto has sent a strong warning to ODM leaders, making it clear that he will not allow the party to operate as an opposition movement within his administration. Speaking during a public event, the President firmly stated, “Sitakubali mtumie ODM kama chama cha upinzani. It’s either itakuwa next government or in the next government.”
Ruto’s remarks come amid growing debate over the future of ODM following the death of its longtime leader, Raila Odinga. The President emphasized that the country is moving forward under a united government, and he expects all political players — including those from ODM — to contribute to national development rather than engage in divisive politics.
He added that his administration welcomes cooperation from all parties willing to work towards Kenya’s progress, but warned that anyone using ODM to promote confrontation or opposition politics will be sidelined. Ruto said Kenya has no time for endless political battles, urging leaders to focus on service delivery and unity.
The statement has stirred mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Supporters of the Kenya Kwanza administration applauded Ruto’s firmness, saying it shows his determination to promote stability and inclusivity. However, some ODM loyalists viewed it as an attempt to weaken the opposition and blur the lines between government and oversight.
As ODM continues to face internal divisions over its direction after Raila’s death, Ruto’s remarks are seen as part of a broader push to align the party with his vision of a unified government. Whether ODM chooses to cooperate or maintain its independence will likely shape the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election.
