Prominent lawyer and political commentator PLO Lumumba has challenged President William Ruto’s approach to Kenya’s development, offering a pointed critique during a recent public address.
Lumumba stated that Kenya cannot achieve progress by trying to imitate other countries without understanding the principles that drove their success. “We are the only country in the world wanting to be another country. I have never had that anywhere! You don’t get into Singapore by doing the opposite of what they did,” he said.
Using a local metaphor, Lumumba further warned against superficial reforms that fail to address the root of national challenges. “When you want to shake a Baobab tree, the only thing that will end up shaking are your buttocks,” he remarked, highlighting the risks of policies that lack proper planning and execution.
The comments have sparked debate on social media, with some praising Lumumba’s frankness and others arguing that his critique could have been delivered more constructively. Political analysts note that his remarks underscore ongoing tensions between public expectations and government strategies for economic growth and governance.
Lumumba emphasized the importance of studying successful models, learning from their policies, and adapting solutions to Kenya’s unique context rather than copying strategies blindly. His speech adds to growing discourse about how Kenya can achieve sustainable development while maintaining its sovereignty and national identity.
