Kenyan singer Nyota Ndogo has composed a life anthem that epitomizes determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her values. Through a heartfelt Facebook post, she recently shared her incredible journey from the slums of Majengo in Ukunda, Mombasa, to achieving musical success on prominent stages.
At the tender age of seventeen, Nyota found herself at a pivotal crossroads, a scenario familiar to many facing challenging circumstances. Rather than compromising her principles, she chose the honorable path of housekeeping.
“I was seventeen going on eighteen; I chose to be a housekeeper and not to sell my body,” she courageously stated. This life-changing decision set the foundation for her extraordinary journey.
Adopting the philosophy that “whoever goes slowly will arrive,” Nyota spent four months as a housekeeper in Nyali, saving every shilling she could. Despite her modest earnings, she managed to save KSh 6,000, part of which she sent to support her mother. Her sacrifices were immense, as she revealed, “The only thing I used to buy is always (sanitary pads).” Her determination to support her family was unwavering, even in the face of limited formal education.
Surprisingly, Nyota’s musical journey began during her time as a housekeeper. While some doubted her aspirations, her perseverance and innate talent eventually captured the attention of radio stations. Despite the media’s focus on her humble beginnings as a housegirl in Nyali, Nyota’s gratitude remained steadfast. “All thanks to God and those who contributed to my growth,” she said.
Born Mwanaisha Abdalla, Nyota Ndogo is the second of six children and the eldest among her sisters. Financial hardships hindered her education, leaving her unable to sit for exams at Makande Primary School. This led her to take up work as a househelp. However, this role became a springboard for her musical aspirations.
In an interview with the Standard Group, Nyota revealed how she nurtured her passion for music by listening to songs on television and radio, writing lyrics, and humming melodies that would later define her career. Her life took a transformative turn when her employer recognized her ambition and treated her as part of the family. This support led to her introduction to music producer Andrew Burchell, popularly known as Madebe, who helped her record her debut album, Chereko.
