A toxic relationship can sometimes lead to one of two devastating outcomes: life-threatening injuries or death. Rosana Kathure’s story is a chilling reminder of the horrors of such a relationship. She survived a brutal attempted murder at the hands of her husband, who struck her with a machete multiple times in a senseless act of violence.
Born and raised in Meru, Rosana had hoped for a happy life when she married her husband. However, over time, their relationship began to reveal its dark side. Her husband’s infidelity became a constant betrayal, and arguments often escalated to threats against her life. Despite the turmoil, Rosana tried to make things work, believing in the vows they had taken.
One day, everything changed when Rosana discovered her husband in bed with another woman. Heartbroken and devastated, she confronted him. In response, he fell to his knees and begged for forgiveness, pleading with her to keep the affair a secret. Rosana, ever the compassionate soul, chose to forgive him, offering her prayers in an attempt to heal the brokenness in their relationship. She focused on caring for their young child, hoping that things would get better.
But despite her forgiveness, the trust was broken. Her husband remained suspicious and distant. One night, he left the house, claiming he was going out to get food, which they were desperately in need of. Unbeknownst to Rosana, he left with a machete and a sharpening tool — his intentions darker than she could have imagined.
That night, while Rosana slept, her husband returned under the cover of darkness. Stealthily, he approached her bedside, machete in hand, and declared that this would be the day he would end both her life and his. His twisted justification was that she could never reveal the truth about his infidelity.
Stunned and terrified, Rosana pleaded with him to calm down, to pray with her so they could overcome their struggles together. But he refused. In a fit of rage, he began to attack her, slicing her hand so violently that several of her fingers fell to the floor. In panic, Rosana screamed for help, but the assault continued mercilessly. He struck her repeatedly in the head and face, severely injuring one of her eyes, before fleeing the scene.
Neighbors, hearing her cries, rushed to help. They found her lying in a pool of blood, and assuming she was dead, they took her to the Meru Mortuary. In the vehicle, she was counted among the deceased, surrounded by seven other bodies. However, hours later, a morgue attendant noticed signs of life. Rosana was quickly rushed to the emergency room, where she began to receive critical treatment.
Her road to recovery was long and painful, but gradually, she regained stability. The damage to her eye, however, was permanent, leaving her with a visible reminder of the violence she had endured. Despite the scars, Rosana is grateful for the second chance at life that she was given. With faith in God, she found the strength to rebuild her life and even welcomed a second child into the world.
In a tragic twist, Rosana’s husband, believing she had died in the attack, chose to end his own life by hanging himself. The story of their tumultuous relationship came to a sad and painful end, leaving Rosana to heal, not only physically but emotionally, from the horrors she endured.
