Kiambaa Member of Parliament Hon. John Kawanjiku has stirred political debate after alleging that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua did not contribute financially to President William Ruto’s 2022 campaign. Speaking during a public address, Kawanjiku stated, “Ndindi Nyoro took a loan and Kimani Ichung’wah sold a plot to support my campaign. Rigathi Gachagua never contributed anything.”
The remarks have sparked widespread reactions within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, with many interpreting them as a sign of growing internal divisions. Kawanjiku’s statement appears to highlight tensions between leaders from the Mount Kenya region over claims of loyalty and sacrifice during Ruto’s presidential bid.
According to the MP, several allies made personal sacrifices to ensure Ruto’s victory, including borrowing money and selling property to fund the campaign. He, however, accused Gachagua of not offering any financial support at the time, despite now holding one of the highest positions in government.
Political analysts say Kawanjiku’s comments could deepen the rift within the coalition, especially amid reports of silent competition for political influence in the Mt. Kenya region. The remarks also come at a time when several Kenya Kwanza leaders have been trading subtle jabs over who deserves more credit for the 2022 election victory.
Neither Gachagua nor his allies have publicly responded to Kawanjiku’s claims, but the statement continues to generate heated discussions online, with Kenyans sharing mixed opinions on the matter.
As the political temperature rises, observers say such remarks could test the unity of the Kenya Kwanza administration as it heads into the second half of its term.
