Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is spearheading a bold campaign to reshape the political dynamics of Mount Kenya by targeting MPs who supported his impeachment last November.
In what many perceive as a well-orchestrated strategy of political retribution, Gachagua has thrown his weight behind rivals of these lawmakers, urging voters to oust them in the 2027 general elections.
Strategic Political Endorsements
Gachagua has carefully selected candidates to challenge the current MPs, positioning himself as a key player in the region’s political realignment. Here’s a breakdown of his endorsements:
- Murang’a County: Former NCIC commissioner Wambui Nyutu is set to take on Woman Representative Betty Maina.
- Mathira Constituency: Gachagua has rallied potential challengers to unseat MP Eric Wamumbi, a former ally turned critic.
- Nyeri Town Constituency: Former MP Ngunjiri Wambugu is being prepared to challenge the incumbent, Duncan Mathenge.
- Othaya Constituency: Lawyer Patrick Ngunjiri, also known as “Wakili wa Mashinani,” is poised to contest against Wambugu Wainaina.
- Nyandarua County: Ngima Wamae is being groomed to run against Woman Representative Faith Gitau.
- Kasarani Constituency: Peter Wambugu, popularly known as “Pemwa,” is Gachagua’s choice to challenge Ronald Karauri.
- Laikipia County: Purity Kendi has been endorsed to take on Woman Representative Jane Kagiri.
- Kiambu County: Mercy Nungari, who lost in 2022, is likely to face Woman Representative Ann Wamuratha.
Additionally, Gachagua is reportedly engaging with seasoned politicians such as former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi, ex-Kiambu MP Jude Njomo, and Kabinga Wa Thayu, in a bid to consolidate his influence across the region.
Calling Out Betrayal
Labeling their actions as acts of betrayal, Gachagua has been vocal in his criticism of the targeted MPs. Speaking at a rally in Tetu, Nyeri County, he urged voters to reject these leaders, stating:
“Even if they come here guarded by state functionaries, they are still unwanted.”
Growing Resistance Against Incumbents
Reports suggest that Gachagua’s campaign has stirred significant opposition to some of the sitting MPs. Allegedly, these lawmakers are now encountering hostility in their constituencies, signaling a potential shift in the region’s political landscape.
With his strategic endorsements and public declarations, Gachagua’s mission appears to be more than just a personal vendetta; it’s a calculated effort to cement his political dominance in Mount Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections.
