A Nairobi man accused of exposing alleged fraudulent practices within Prophet David Owuor’s Repentance and Holiness Church has been granted bail on a Sh2 million bond.
Bishop Faustine Ojango, a former senior church member turned whistleblower, is facing charges of cyber harassment under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018.
Ojango was arrested on January 3, 2025, following accusations of sharing defamatory content on social media directed at Archbishop Michael Nieswand, a prominent figure in Owuor’s ministry.
Court records reveal that the posts, made between December 27 and December 30, 2024, allegedly aimed to defame and harass the church leader.
Bishop Ojango recently gained public attention after a controversial interview in which he accused the church of orchestrating fake miracles and pressuring members into surrendering their life savings.
He described the ministry as fostering a “cult-like environment,” where questioning its operations led to ostracism or targeted harassment.
According to Ojango, many miracles showcased during church crusades were fabricated to bolster Prophet Owuor’s reputation as a divine figure. He also alleged that church members were coerced into extreme financial sacrifices, including selling their properties or taking loans, under the guise of “honoring the Prophet.”
The arrest has ignited public outrage, with critics accusing authorities of trying to silence Ojango and protect the church from further scrutiny.
Supporters have denounced the high bond amount of Sh2 million or cash bail of Sh700,000 as excessive, suggesting undue influence by the ministry.
“This is a clear attempt to suppress the truth,” said a close associate of Ojango, who spoke anonymously. “The charges are baseless and are designed to intimidate anyone brave enough to challenge Prophet Owuor and his ministry.”
Ojango’s claims have triggered increased examination of Prophet Owuor’s church, prompting other former members to come forward with similar accounts.
“I was part of the ministry for over five years, and I can confirm the bishop’s allegations,” said a former church member. “Anyone who dares to leave or question the ministry becomes a target.”
