‘My Life Is In Danger,’ Says Police Officer who allegedly Shot Dead Maseno University Student During Azimio Protests

A police officer assigned to the Maseno Police Station, Corporal Georgina Osoro, has written a letter to Inspector General Japhet Koome, claiming she is being falsely accused of shooting and killing a college student during the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya mass protests last month. On March 20, 2023, during the anti-government demonstrations, the officer is accused of shooting and killing third-year Maseno University student Wiliam Mayange.

In her letter, Corporal Osoro requests information from the IG about her assignment between March 19 and March 22, 2023, the dates of the protests, so she can file a lawsuit against her accusers. She claims that on the day the student was shot dead, she was away on duty in Kisumu, approximately 35km from Maseno town.

Moreover, Corporal Osoro adds that she has been subjected to attacks by members of the public regarding the incident, adding that she fears for her life as she and her children have allegedly been threatened. “It has become extremely difficult for her to work or even send her children to school on account of well-founded fears that they shall be harmed,” reads the letter.

In addition, Osoro wants the IG to supply the Certified Extract from the Occurrence Book and Certified Extract from the Arms Movement Book Entries for the days of March 19 – 21, and provide the list of police officers assigned coverage on March 20 at Kisumu town. This information would help her prove that she was not present at the scene of the incident and was not responsible for the fatal shooting.

Finally, she also requests that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the National Police Service’s (NPS) Internal Affairs Department move swiftly to investigate the incident and take into account all circumstantial evidence in order to inform the public at large that she was not responsible for the fatal shooting. This would not only help clear her name but also restore public trust in the police force.

In conclusion, Corporal Georgina Osoro has denied any involvement in the shooting of the third-year Maseno University student during the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya mass protests. She has requested information from the IG and other authorities to help her prove her innocence and restore her reputation. The incident highlights the need for thorough investigations and the importance of protecting innocent individuals from false accusations and harm.
