The situation became particularly tense during recent maandamano (demonstrations), where the youth—especially members of Gen Z—have been the most affected.
A recent viral video has further fueled public debate. The footage captures a police vehicle involved in a road accident. The vehicle had overturned, trapping several officers inside. One of the officers could be heard calling for help.
However, what stood out was the reaction from some bystanders. Instead of rushing to assist, a few individuals were seen recording the scene, with one voice in the background reportedly saying, “Let them die too, don’t help him.” This chilling moment has sparked a wider conversation online about the strained relationship between law enforcement and the public.
As tensions rise, many are calling for reforms and efforts to rebuild trust between citizens and those tasked with protecting them.
