Leonard Omusula, the internet sensation behind the viral phrase “Jina Hutaki,” is back on the streets after being evicted from his home. The social media figure, who gained fame for his catchy catchphrase, is facing a tough situation as he was booted from his house due to his sponsor’s failure to pay rent.
In a video shared by Noah Muhindi on X, Omusula is seen wandering the streets of Nairobi, looking defeated. When asked about his return to the streets, Omusula revealed that his sponsor had not paid the rent for September and October, leading to the landlord evicting him. “I was enjoying staying in the house, but my sponsor failed to pay the rent for September and October, so the landlord asked me to leave,” he explained.
Muhindi captioned the video: “Leonard Omusula (‘Jina Hutaki’) is back on the streets after being evicted when his sponsor failed to pay September’s rent. Despite his situation, he’s as lively as ever but urgently needs accommodation. I bought him tea and lunch, but he requires more. If anyone can assist, please reach out.”
Netizens had mixed reactions to the video:
- @MelvinSagini: “He can go back home and get his life together.”
- @SubaruTurboGT: “This guy should be taken to a rehabilitation center and given a job there.”
- @mabatiguy: “People need to work. Society is breeding a culture of ‘handouts’.”
- @khalifsmurda: “He’s usually found around Keekorok Road.”
- @nottinnot11: “Why did he expect to be helped for all these months? He should stand on his own now.”
Earlier, Butere MP Tindi Mwale had extended a helping hand by inviting Omusula into his posh Nairobi residence and offering him a job as a messenger in his parliamentary office. During their meeting, Mwale treated Omusula to a meal and gave him a tour of his office, leaving Omusula grateful and full of hope.
The ‘Jina Hutaki’ meme gained popularity after Omusula’s interview with K24, where he candidly spoke about the struggles of alcohol abuse and poverty. The clip quickly went viral as social media users adopted it for various contexts.
