A 94-year-old widow was released from Kakamega Women’s Prison on Thursday, bringing joy and celebration among her family, friends, and well-wishers. The elderly woman had been held at the prison after being arrested alongside her sister-in-law.
The two were accused in a land dispute case, which led to their arrest. However, the sister-in-law was released earlier on bond, leaving the old widow in custody. Her stay in prison had raised concern among members of the public, who questioned the treatment of elderly persons in the justice system.
Upon her release, the old woman was received with songs, dances, and tears of joy. Relatives and villagers expressed their happiness and thanked those who helped in securing her freedom. Some well-wishers had stepped in to support her case after her story gained attention.
Speaking after the release, one family member said they were relieved and happy to have her back home. “She is very old and was not supposed to be in such a place. We thank God and all those who helped,” they said.
Prison officials confirmed that the woman was treated well during her stay and received medical attention due to her age. They also welcomed her release, saying that such cases should be handled with compassion and understanding.
The family is now calling on authorities to speed up the case and allow justice to be served without causing more suffering to the elderly.
