Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s wife, Mama Ida Odinga, has spoken out emotionally about the way people have been referring to her since her husband’s passing. Speaking during a recent event, Ida expressed surprise and mixed emotions over being called “Raila’s widow”, a title she admits she never expected to carry.
“It surprises me when people start referring to me as Raila’s widow because I didn’t know that at this age I would be baptised with a new name,” she said.
Her statement left many in attendance reflecting on the emotional journey she has had to endure following Raila’s death. Ida described the transition as both painful and humbling, noting that while she remains proud of her husband’s legacy, adjusting to life without him has been one of her greatest challenges.
Since the burial of the late opposition leader, Mama Ida has continued to play a visible role in public life — attending memorial services, community events, and offering words of encouragement to supporters still mourning Kenya’s long-time political icon.
Her courage and composure have drawn praise from Kenyans across the political divide, many describing her as a symbol of strength and resilience.
As she continues to navigate her new chapter, Mama Ida’s words serve as a poignant reminder of the personal cost of public service and the enduring love story between her and the late Raila Odinga — a man who dedicated his life to the fight for democracy and justice in Kenya.
