Inside Ringtone and Kagure’s fights for prime properties left behind by dead foreigners

Gospel musician Alex Apoko, popularly known as Ringtone, is currently entangled in a legal dispute over a prime property in Karen, Nairobi. He is accused of collaborating with Alfred Juma Ayora in an alleged scheme to defraud Teresiah Adhiambo of a 0.47-acre parcel of land valued at approximately Ksh50 million. The property is at the center of a legal battle involving claims of adverse possession.

Ringtone’s legal troubles have been compounded by his failure to appear in court for a scheduled hearing, leading to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest. His lawyers claimed he was hospitalized due to illness and submitted medical records to support this assertion. However, the court questioned the authenticity of the documents and rejected them, casting doubt on the credibility of his explanation.

This is not the first time Ringtone has faced property-related controversies. In 2016, he was accused of attempting to defraud a family in Runda of their house and land. Reports suggested that he had forcibly confronted the family over a property allegedly allocated to him illegally. He later denied the accusations, attributing them to envy from individuals seeking to damage his reputation.

Additionally, Ringtone was evicted from a seven-bedroom mansion in Karen’s Muiri Gardens in 2016 after failing to pay two months’ rent, amounting to Ksh400,000. Despite his public claims of being Kenya’s richest musician, the eviction highlighted financial challenges contradicting his affluent image.

The ongoing legal proceedings regarding the Karen property are set to continue, with the next court mention scheduled for May 7, 2025. Ringtone is expected to respond to the charges at that time.
