During an interview with Andrew Kibe, choreographer David Moya shared his journey to becoming the most followed person on TikTok in Kenya. Moya, who studied Communication in college, initially posted his content on YouTube but was disappointed with the lack of income generated despite paying his dancers. It wasn’t until the post-Covid era that Moya decided to try something new to uplift Kenyans, which led him to record content on the streets.
His initial surprise videos attracted mostly male viewers, but Moya soon realized that he needed to capture the attention of female viewers. He reintroduced dancing to his content and gained massive success with a video of him dancing for a lady at the market, which gathered 10 million views in just two days on TikTok.
Moya remained active on TikTok, constantly seeking feedback from his audience to improve his content. He persistently made over 50 viral videos, despite not making any money from them initially. However, he later started earning from clients who paid for his services, such as dancing while delivering gifts.
Moya attributes his success on TikTok to his persistence, passion, and attentiveness to his audience’s interests.
