American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey has shared the heartbreaking news of the deaths of her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, both of whom passed away on the same day.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life on the same day,” Carey said in a statement to CNN.
The Grammy-winning artist expressed gratitude for the time she spent with her mother in the week leading up to her passing and requested privacy during this difficult period.
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” Carey stated. “I appreciate everyone’s love, support, and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
Carey did not disclose the causes of death for Patricia and Alison Carey.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the five-time Grammy Award winner opened up about her complex relationship with her mother, acknowledging the pain and confusion it caused. Despite the challenges, she also conveyed the deep love she held for her, dedicating the book to her with the words: “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
