Busia Resident Magistrate Eunice Serem has handed down a 30-year prison sentence to a man found guilty of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl. The verdict, delivered by Serem on Friday following a case prosecuted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, affirmed the prosecution’s successful presentation of evidence.
Four witnesses testified against the accused, detailing how he violated the young girl and transmitted a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) to her. “The Prosecution presented a total of 4 witnesses who informed the Court that the accused defiled the child in a cassava plantation and subsequently infected the child with a Sexually Transmitted Infection,” stated the ruling.
In a separate case within the same jurisdiction, a middle-aged man received an 18-year prison term for sexually abusing and impregnating a 12-year-old girl in Busia. The court learned that the perpetrator committed the crime while employed as a teacher at a local school.
Faith Kaberia, representing the prosecution, successfully established the guilt of the accused by presenting evidence from six witnesses. Their testimonies revealed the egregious nature of the offense, resulting in the young victim’s pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage.
Serem, in delivering the verdict, affirmed that the prosecution had effectively discharged its burden of proof through witness testimonies and presented exhibits, thereby securing the conviction of the accused.
