An up-and-coming Kenyan comedian, Arap Uria, has garnered recognition from the international football media outlet, SuperSport. The skit that caught SuperSport’s attention featured Uria’s impersonation of the famous football commentator, Peter Drury. The performance was so impressive that the football channel granted Uria an interview and even received a special message from Drury himself.
Drury expressed his eagerness to meet Uria someday, saying, “I’m saddened that I can’t be there this week, as I’m in Doha for the World Cup draw. But I must say, I absolutely love what you do. I hope you’re laughing with me, not at me. Your skit is truly funny and superb. Football should be taken seriously, but not too seriously, and you have shown the perfect balance of passion in your performance.” He went on to invite Uria to teach him how to commentate one day when they finally meet face-to-face.
In response to this international recognition, Uria stated, “It means a lot to me to be acknowledged by an international TV channel. Thank you, Lord, for opening doors to success.” The comedian has also done impressions of the British commentator, Martin Tyler, from Sky Sports.
Uria, whose real name is Meshack Kiprop Biwott, is 27 years old and hails from a village in Moiben constituency, Uasin Gishu County. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and is a teacher by profession. He adopted the stage name Uria, which is a family name inspired by his grandfather.
His journey in comedy began with his YouTube channel and influencer work on Instagram, working with brands such as MultiChoice (DStv) and Betika. Initially, his skits involved drunken rants that he says his father, a devout Christian, found offensive. However, his mother encouraged him to continue developing his comedy acts. He now has a co-performer, Gogo Smallz, and has changed his scripts to incorporate Swahili and English lip-syncs.
Arap Uria currently has over 37,700 followers on Instagram and over 324,000 subscribers on YouTube. He also has paid partnerships with major companies in Kenya.
