Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has come out guns blazing against the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which has sparked nationwide anxiety over suspicions that it could be a backdoor attempt to extend presidential term limits.
Speaking on Citizen Radio, Sifuna dismissed the proposal as “miswada ya ujinga sana,” insisting that it contains dangerous loopholes capable of undermining Kenya’s democratic fabric.
Although the Senate clarified on September 9 that the bill does not touch presidential, gubernatorial, or parliamentary terms, Sifuna said Kenyans should not lower their guard.
“There are senators who will not allow such nonsense to pass. I will stand with Kenyans to defend the Constitution,” he vowed.
He reminded citizens of the Finance Bill protests, when demonstrators stormed Parliament grounds to stop unpopular laws, telling Kenyans they already hold the ultimate power.
“You are even more powerful than the politicians,” Sifuna declared, a statement that resonated with youth-led movements online.
Other lawmakers, including Senator Samson Cherargei, have also expressed unease, signaling growing opposition inside Parliament.
Civil society groups and online communities continue to demand full transparency on the bill, warning that any attempt to sneak in term limit changes will be fiercely resisted.
For now, Sifuna’s fiery warning has ignited fresh debate, leaving Kenyans wondering: what exactly is hidden inside this controversial bill?
