The internet has the power to make or break a person’s reputation and career. With the rise of technology, more Kenyans are finding ways to earn a living through social media, leading to an increase in influencer culture. But beyond the influencers, the internet has also brought to the forefront ordinary individuals who have suddenly become famous.

Priscilla wa Imani, also known as the whistling TikToker, is the latest example of this. Her spontaneous and entertaining whistles have earned her widespread recognition and she has been invited to several events, including being asked for bus fare by radio presenter Maina Kageni and being invited to City Hall by Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja.

Here are five other regular Kenyans who achieved instant fame through the internet:

  1. Githeri Man – During the 2017 General Election, Martin Kamotho became famous after being captured on camera eating githeri from a polythene bag while waiting in line to vote. He quickly gained popularity and received various gifts from corporations, as well as a Head of State Commendation.
  2. Jane Anyango Andika – Also known as Mama Serikali, Jane became famous after her passionate plea for help during a flood in 2012 was turned into a meme. Her misfortunes turned into good luck when she was offered a contract for a commercial by Safaricom.
  3. Ivy Chelimo – Also known as Shawty, Ivy was the first person to tweet about Deputy President Rigathi Gachaua’s son, Riggy G. The Deputy President later promised her a job at his office after meeting her.

  5. “Sh100 wedding couple” – Wilson Wanjohi and Ann Muhonja went viral in 2017 for having a wedding that cost only Sh100. Kenyans online rallied around them and raised Sh3.5 million for the couple to have their dream wedding.
